In 1981, The Dominican Medical Center opened its doors to service the community of Washington Heights. This Hispanic community has the necessity of a health service where they can feel confident to deal with their health issues and where they are sure that their language will be understood. From the very beginning, this health center had one sole purpose – to serve the Hispanic community in the areas of their health care and at the same time understanding the need for a multicultural and bilingual atmosphere. Therefore taking the position of the building that previously belonged to Wadsworth Hospital. The Dominican Medical Center accepted the challenge of the plans of health and services to the community of Washington Heights with a competent.

In 1986, The Dominican Medical Center was designated as the civil surgeon of the United States in the Service of Immigration and Naturalization. Because of this, a great number of patients came from as far as Massachusetts and Virginia. They were attracted by the reputation of The Dominican Medical Center and the excellent care and courtesy we provide to the Hispanic community.
We employ a group of doctors and team members that are specifically Hispanic and bilingual. Because of this, THE DOMINICAN MEDICAL CENTER immediately became known for the acceptance by the community of Washington Heights and of the medical insurances where English speaking doctors tried to communicate with their Spanish speaking patients through translators.
CMD crossed the barrier not only to bring their patients a more direct form of communication but also with an entire team of health care workers that completely understand your culture. Many patients have said that this is the first time they feel absolutely comfortable in a health care facility.
